Title: "Egyptian Sahara" - Khayamiya

Style: Handstitched Applique Art

Origin: Handstitched in Egypt

Description: The Tentmakers of Cairo are the artists behind this amazing quilt/patchwork artwork that goes back hundreds of years ago. Located on the same street “Khayamiya Street”, in the heart of old Cairo, these talented artists sit quietly working their magic on each piece of fabric, transforming it to an exquisite piece of art. Khayamyiya simply means Tent making. Years ago, tentmakers used to decorate tents used by desert travelers from the inside, to give it a delightful and a refreshing feel by using brilliant colors and designs.

What is Egyptian Appliqué? It is a type of quilting, however different from any other quilting you’ve seen before. It’s a hand stitched appliqué on a cotton colorful background backed by a heavy canvas fabric that can be hanged on the wall or used as cushions. The appliqué pieces are always bright and colorful. Each piece is delicately hand stitched on a magnificent background carefully chosen to match the color and design of the whole piece.

This handmade tent making artwork occupation is unfortunately endangered. We are trying to help those artists to keep this historic legacy alive.

In our gallery, we offer variety of designs, from geometric Islamic designs, to Pharaonic Lotus designs, to even Arabic Calligraphy designs. All these art pieces are made with 100% cotton fabrics.

By owning one of these exquisite pieces of art, you have owned a piece of history from the heart of Old Cairo.

Artist: Adel Ghabbour

Size: Approximately 12" X 16"

Title: "Eye of Horus II"

Origin: Hand Painted in Egypt on Handmade Egyptian Papyrus Paper

Description: This mystic famous painting by Adel Ghabbour , is a symbol of power, healing and protection. “Eye of Horus”, which is also known as “Wedjat” meaning the green one, was believed to have magical powers which could combat evil.  Horus was the god of the sky, his eyes represented the sun and the moon. The Wedjat eye symbolizes the eye that Horus lost in the battle with his evil uncle Seth. According to myth, it was found by Isis, the mother of Horus and given back to him by goddess Hathour.

This stunning painting is part of our new rough edges collection for more natural ancient look.

Egyptian Papyrus Paper

Our papyrus paper is handmade in Egypt from the inner stem of the finest Cyperus Papyrus plants. Our suppliers responsibly grow their own plants, then use the inner stems to make the thin strips form which the final papyrus sheets are formed.

The sheets are formed by arranging the strips side by side in two cross layers, then soaking them in water for six to twelve weeks. The sheets are then hammered to squeeze out the remaining water, dried, then polished and cut to size. The result is an exquisite natural cotton like, yet slightly textured handmade paper like you’ve never seen before.

The process of crafting papyrus paper is a green eco friendly process that goes back thousands of years ago.  All the steps are made by hand, and the Papyrus Paper gets its unique neutral color naturally from soaking into water. The more the sheets are soaked the darker they become.

Painting on papyrus paper creates a magnificent textured unique piece of art, that you can hang on your wall and be sure that it will impress you, as well as your guests every time you look at it.

Certificate of Authenticity

Our Papyrus Paintings come with a Certificate of Authenticity that Guarantees that they were Painted in Egypt on the finest Handmade Egyptian Papyrus Paper.

Title: "Festive Lotus II" - Khayamiya

Artist: Ahmed Fathy

Size: Approximately 12" X 16"

Title: "Haven"

Origin: Hand Painted in Egypt on Handmade Egyptian Papyrus Paper

Description: This amazingly colorful painting by Ahmed Fathy shows a shelter, or “sabil”, which is one of the many shelters that were almost everywhere in old Islamic Cairo. “Sabils” are facilities providing free, fresh water for the people who are passing by. Usually “sabils” are built along with “kuttabs”, an elementary school that teaches children to read and write. One of the most important and beautiful sabil-kuttab in Cairo is the Sabil-Kuttab of Katkhuda. It was built in 1744 by a pioneer Egyptian Architect Katkhuda of Egypt. Architecture was so delicate at that time that even a simple facility like “sabil” was designed to be a piece of art.
